A detective with the Tulare County Sheriff's Office was killed Thursday while serving an eviction notice in Porterville, California, according to sheriff's officials.

The suspect allegedly waited in ambush for law enforcement officers arriving to serve the eviction notice, authorities said. The detective was fatally shot during the encounter.

Following the initial shooting, a standoff ensued between the suspect and responding police units. The confrontation culminated when the suspect was struck and killed by a police BearCat armored vehicle after what officials described as a firefight.
