Brazilian ex-spy chief Alexandre Ramagem detained by ICE after fleeing coup conviction
Former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem was arrested by U.S. immigration agents after fleeing Brazil to avoid a 16-year sentence for his role in a coup plot.

Alexandre Ramagem, Brazil's former intelligence chief under ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after months as a fugitive from Brazilian justice.
Ramagem fled Brazil shortly before being sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in plotting a military coup. According to reports, he traveled by car to Guyana before boarding a flight to the United States, where he had remained since the conviction.
The arrest ended a six-month international manhunt that spanned two continents. Ramagem served as both Bolsonaro's intelligence chief and later as a congressman during the former president's administration.
Ramagem was among seven members of Bolsonaro's cabinet convicted in connection with an attempted coup plot. While the other six convicted officials began serving their sentences, Ramagem's flight to the United States allowed him to avoid imprisonment until his recent detention.
The case is part of broader legal proceedings related to alleged coup attempts in Brazil, with former president Bolsonaro himself reportedly sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison on related charges.
