Former UCLA gynecologist sentenced to 11 years for sexual abuse of patients
James Heaps pleaded guilty to 13 felony sexual abuse charges and received 11-year sentence after previous conviction was overturned on appeal.

A former University of California, Los Angeles gynecologist was sentenced to 11 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to 13 felony sexual abuse charges related to the assault of multiple patients during his career.
James Heaps entered the guilty plea in connection with sexual assaults of several patients he treated while working as an OB-GYN at UCLA. The sentencing represents the conclusion of a legal case that has spanned multiple years.
This marks the second time Heaps has received an 11-year prison sentence for sexual abuse crimes. He was originally sentenced in 2023 to the same prison term after being convicted of five counts of sexual battery and penetration involving two patients.
However, that initial conviction was overturned by an appeals court in February. The appellate court ruled that Heaps had been denied a fair trial because the judge failed to share with his defense attorneys a note from the jury foreman expressing concerns about a juror's English language proficiency.
The case required a new legal proceeding, which concluded with Tuesday's guilty plea to the expanded set of 13 felony charges. The sentence length remains the same as his original 2023 conviction, despite the increased number of charges in the plea agreement.
