Pipe bomb suspect faces additional charges for devices near RNC, DNC buildings
Brian Cole Jr. received two new felony charges for allegedly placing pipe bombs near political headquarters before Jan. 6, 2021.

A Virginia man accused of placing pipe bombs near the headquarters of both major political parties the night before the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack now faces two additional felony charges, according to court documents released Wednesday.
Brian Cole Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was charged with attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and committing an act of terrorism while armed. These charges were added to his existing case in a newly released indictment.
Cole was initially arrested in December and charged with transporting and positioning two improvised explosive devices outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee buildings. The devices were discovered on January 6, 2021, as events unfolded at the U.S. Capitol.
The pipe bombs were placed outside both party headquarters on the evening of January 5, 2021, according to investigators. The discovery of the devices occurred during the same day that supporters of then-President Donald Trump breached the Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
The new charges carry significant potential penalties, as weapons of mass destruction and terrorism-related offenses typically result in lengthy prison sentences if convicted. Cole's case represents one of the ongoing prosecutions related to events surrounding January 6, 2021.
