Major AI Companies Release Product Updates as Competition Intensifies
OpenAI and Anthropic both announced significant updates to their AI development tools, while Google enhanced its Chrome browser's AI features.

Two major artificial intelligence companies released substantial updates to their development platforms this week, highlighting the intensifying competition in the AI tools market.
OpenAI announced major enhancements to its Codex desktop application, expanding its capabilities beyond code generation to include system-wide computer control on Mac devices. The updated Codex can now access and interact with other applications on users' computers, launch programs, and perform tasks in the background while users continue working. The platform also added an integrated web browser, direct access to OpenAI's image generation model, and support for over 90 new plugins connecting to developer tools like CircleCI and GitLab. OpenAI reported that Codex now serves 3 million weekly developers.
Concurrently, Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.7, which the company positions as its most powerful publicly available large language model. The new version shows improvements in software engineering tasks, visual reasoning, and graduate-level problem solving. According to Anthropic's benchmarks, Opus 4.7 achieved a 64.3% success rate on coding tasks and scored 1753 on knowledge work evaluations, outperforming competing models from OpenAI and Google in several categories. The model also supports higher resolution image processing, handling images up to 2,576 pixels on their longest edge.
Google also updated its Chrome browser's AI Mode feature, allowing users to open web links alongside AI chat responses rather than in separate tabs. The side-by-side viewing aims to reduce tab switching during AI-assisted web browsing sessions.
The rapid succession of these releases reflects the competitive pressure among AI companies to capture developer mindshare and enterprise customers. Industry observers note that the improvements focus particularly on autonomous task completion and reliability, addressing previous limitations where AI assistants would fail to complete complex, multi-step workflows.
Both OpenAI and Anthropic have maintained their existing pricing structures despite the enhanced capabilities, with Anthropic keeping its API pricing at $5-25 per million tokens and OpenAI offering flexible team pricing options starting at $100.
