Philz Coffee reversed its decision to remove Pride flags from stores after facing swift backlash from employees and customers, the San Francisco-based chain announced Friday.

CEO Mahesh Sadarangani issued an apology statement acknowledging his error in the initial policy change. "I made a mistake and I am sincerely sorry," Sadarangani said. "The Pride flag is a symbol of safety and belonging for people who don't always find that in the world, and that is not something I want to take away from anyone who walks into a Philz."

The controversy began when the company announced it would remove Pride flags from its locations. Workers responded by launching a petition that gathered more than 7,300 signatures opposing the flag removal policy.

The reversal came approximately one week after the original announcement sparked criticism. The company's decision to reinstate the Pride flag policy represents a quick turnaround following the employee-led campaign and public pressure.

Philz Coffee operates multiple locations primarily in California, with the chain known for its custom-blended coffee drinks and community-focused approach to cafe culture.
