Four candidates are scheduled to present themselves this week as potential successors to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The number of candidates represents a significant decrease from the selection process held approximately eight years ago, when Guterres was chosen for the position. In 2016, the process attracted a larger field of contenders.

The audition process this week will allow the candidates to present their qualifications and vision for leading the international organization. The Secretary-General serves as the chief administrative officer of the United Nations and plays a key role in international diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts.

Guterres, who has served as Secretary-General since 2017, was previously the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Prime Minister of Portugal. The selection of a new Secretary-General requires approval by the UN Security Council and confirmation by the General Assembly.
