A Canadian woman was killed and six other people were injured Monday when a gunman opened fire at the historic Teotihuacán pyramids, one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations located about an hour north of Mexico City.

The shooting occurred during the lunch hour at the archaeological site, with mobile phone videos capturing the incident as visitors took cover. Video footage published by local news organizations showed a man standing with a gun on top of one of the pyramids while gunshots rang out.

Mexican authorities said the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Of the six injured, four people sustained gunshot wounds while two others were hurt in falls during the incident. Those wounded included tourists from Colombia, Russia and Canada, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear. All injured individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Security officials recovered a gun, knife and ammunition from the scene following the shooting. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, stating she was in contact with the Canadian Embassy regarding the incident. The Teotihuacán pyramids, built by ancient civilizations and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracted more than 1.8 million international visitors last year according to government figures.

The shooting represents the latest violent incident in Mexico as the country prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The archaeological site features massive pyramid structures including the famous Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon along the Avenue of the Dead.
