The San Diego Padres have signed free agent right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year contract, adding depth to their starting rotation.

Giolito had declined a $19 million option with the Boston Red Sox at the end of the previous season, making him available as a free agent. The veteran pitcher remained unsigned as free agency extended into the 2025 season before reaching an agreement with San Diego.

The signing comes as the Padres look to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season. Giolito brings experience as a former All-Star who has pitched for multiple major league teams throughout his career.

The Padres are currently tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball, making the addition of rotation depth a priority as they pursue postseason success. Financial terms of Giolito's contract with San Diego were not immediately disclosed.
