A Colorado prosecutor announced Wednesday that an immigration officer has been charged with third-degree assault and criminal mischief following an incident during protests outside an ICE facility.

The charges stem from video footage showing a masked federal agent seizing a protester and placing her in a chokehold before pulling her across the street. The incident occurred during demonstrations in Durango, Colorado.

The protests took place on October 27 in response to the detention of three Colombian asylum-seekers - a man and two children - who were apprehended while traveling to and from school that morning.

A spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection acknowledged receiving a request for comment but did not immediately respond to questions about the charges against the officer. Court documents did not list any attorney representing the charged officer.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement activities and local communities, particularly regarding the treatment of asylum-seekers and protesters.
