BMW has made significant progress in developing vehicles capable of changing their exterior appearance through electronic display technology. The automotive manufacturer has showcased multiple concept cars utilizing E Ink panels, the same technology found in electronic reading devices like the Kindle.

The company first introduced the BMW iX Flow concept car at CES 2022, which featured the ability to dynamically alter its appearance using grayscale E Ink panels across the vehicle's exterior surface. This initial demonstration proved the feasibility of integrating electronic paper display technology into automotive applications.

Building on this foundation, BMW subsequently developed two additional concept vehicles with enhanced capabilities. The BMW i Vision Dee concept and the BMW i5 Flow Nostokana both incorporated upgraded color E Ink panels, expanding beyond the original grayscale limitations to display a broader spectrum of colors.

The E Ink technology works by manipulating charged particles within the display panels to create different visual effects across the car's surface. This allows the vehicle's exterior to shift between various colors and potentially patterns, though the technology remains in the concept and development phase.

BMW has not announced specific timelines for bringing color-changing vehicles to market, as the technology continues to undergo testing and refinement. The concept vehicles represent the company's exploration of how digital display technology might be integrated into future automotive designs.
