Meta Signs Solar Power Deal With Space Startup; Spotify Launches Fitness Content Hub
Meta agreed to purchase up to 1 gigawatt of space-based solar power from Overview Energy, while Spotify partnered with Peloton to launch fitness content.
Meta Platforms has entered into an agreement to purchase up to one gigawatt of solar power from Overview Energy, a startup developing space-based solar power technology. The deal represents the first commercial contract for Overview Energy, which aims to deploy satellites capable of beaming solar energy collected in space down to customers on Earth's surface.
The partnership is designed to help power Meta's data centers, which require substantial amounts of electricity to support the company's social media platforms and artificial intelligence operations. Overview Energy's approach involves collecting solar power in space, where sunlight is more consistent and intense than on Earth's surface, then transmitting that energy wirelessly to ground-based receivers.
Space-based solar power has long been considered a theoretical solution for clean energy generation, but technical and economic challenges have prevented widespread implementation. The Meta deal marks a significant step toward commercializing the technology, though Overview Energy has not disclosed specific timelines for when the satellites will be operational or energy delivery will begin.
Separately, Spotify announced a partnership with Peloton to launch a comprehensive fitness content hub within its music streaming platform. The initiative will provide both free and Premium subscribers access to workout videos, curated fitness playlists, and guided exercise content from various fitness creators including Yoga with Kassandra, Sweaty Studio, Chloe Ting, and Pilates Body by Raven.
Spotify Premium subscribers will gain access to more than 1,400 classes from Peloton's fitness library as part of the collaboration. The move represents Spotify's expansion beyond music streaming into the fitness category, building on previous efforts with customized running playlists to create a more comprehensive wellness offering for users.
