Nathan Chasing Horse, an actor known for his role in the 1990 film "Dances With Wolves," was sentenced to life in prison Monday by a Nevada judge for sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls.

A jury convicted Chasing Horse in January on 13 of 21 charges he faced, mostly related to sexual assault. He was acquitted on some charges during the trial.

The charges stemmed from accusations by three Indigenous women and girls. One victim was 14 years old when the assaults began, according to court records.

According to The Guardian's reporting, prosecutors alleged that Chasing Horse exploited his position as a spiritual leader in the Indigenous community to commit the crimes against his victims.

Chasing Horse appeared in the Academy Award-winning western film "Dances With Wolves" starring Kevin Costner. The movie, released in 1990, won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The case was prosecuted in Nevada, where the crimes allegedly occurred. The life sentence was handed down following his conviction on the multiple sexual assault charges.
