AMD announced plans to extend its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology to older graphics card generations, expanding compatibility beyond its newest hardware.

Jack Huynh, AMD's head of computing and graphics, revealed the rollout timeline in a social media announcement. The FSR 4.1 technology will first arrive on RDNA 3 GPUs in July 2025, followed by support for RDNA 2 graphics cards in early 2027.

The announcement indicates AMD's strategy to provide extended software support for previous-generation hardware, allowing owners of older Radeon graphics cards to access newer upscaling features. FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is AMD's upscaling technology that improves gaming performance by rendering games at lower resolutions and using algorithms to upscale the image.

The staggered release schedule suggests different technical requirements or development timelines for implementing FSR 4.1 across the various GPU architectures. RDNA 3 represents AMD's most recent graphics architecture before the current generation, while RDNA 2 powers graphics cards released in previous years.

This backward compatibility approach contrasts with some industry practices where newer software features remain exclusive to latest-generation hardware, potentially extending the useful life of existing AMD graphics cards for gaming applications.
