At least four people died in one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia since the war began, with most casualties occurring near Moscow, according to Russian local authorities Sunday.

Three people were killed in the Moscow region during the overnight strike. A woman died after a drone hit her home in Khimki, a city northwest of Moscow, while two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki, located 6 miles north of the capital, according to regional Governor Andrei Vorobyev. The governor reported that drones also damaged infrastructure and several residential high-rise buildings.

In Moscow itself, at least 12 people were wounded in the nighttime attack, mostly near the entrance to the city's oil refinery, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. He reported that the refinery's technology was not damaged. A fourth fatality occurred in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, where a man was killed when a drone struck a truck.

Russian air defenses shot down 81 drones headed for Moscow overnight, marking one of the largest attacks on the Russian capital since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, according to state media reports. The Russian defense ministry said air defenses destroyed 556 drones over Russia overnight, with over 1,000 shot down or jammed in the previous 24 hours.

Moscow's largest airport, Sheremetyevo, reported that drone debris had fallen on its premises but caused no damage. The attack came as Russia launched its own drone offensive against Ukraine, with Ukrainian forces reporting they shot down or jammed 279 of 287 Russian drones overnight.

The Ukrainian strikes injured eight people in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, including in the regional capital of Dnipro and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, according to Ukraine's emergency service. Residential buildings were damaged in multiple locations.
