A medical worker who developed hantavirus symptoms while on Ascension Island has been admitted to a London hospital for treatment, health authorities confirmed.

The patient was transported to the High Consequence Infectious Diseases unit at Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust on Saturday. The specialized unit is equipped to handle cases involving serious infectious diseases that pose potential public health risks.

Hantavirus is a viral infection typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine, or saliva. The virus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory condition, though early symptoms may resemble flu-like illness including fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.
