Thousands of demonstrators gathered at Mississippi's War Memorial Building auditorium on Wednesday to rally in support of voting rights, according to organizers. The event drew participants from Mississippi and other southern states.

The demonstration was organized in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that affected provisions of the Voting Rights Act designed to prevent racial discrimination in voting. Organizers chose the War Memorial Building as the venue due to its historical significance in the state's voting rights history.

Amir Badat, southern states director at Fair Fight Action, said Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act had previously "stopped states, counties, cities, from passing redistricting maps that discriminate against Black voters and it led to the biggest growth of Black political power since Reconstruction."

The Supreme Court's recent decision has implications beyond congressional redistricting. According to NPR's analysis, the ruling could affect voting rights cases involving at least 17 state and local governments, potentially threatening the electoral power of racial minority voters at multiple levels of government.

The Mississippi rally represents part of a broader series of demonstrations taking place across southern states in response to the Court's voting rights decision. Organizers have emphasized concerns about potential restrictions on minority voting access in the region.
