Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) announced Friday that she will run for reelection in Florida's 20th Congressional District following the state's redistricting process.

The former Democratic National Committee chairwoman was drawn out of her previous district as a result of the Republican-led redistricting effort backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The redistricting changes significantly altered the political map across Florida.

Wasserman Schultz said she will continue to use her seniority in Washington to work on making Broward County safer and less expensive for residents. She has served in Congress since 2005 and previously chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2011 to 2016.

Her decision to run in the 20th District, which has a majority-Black population in South Florida, has created tensions with some Black Democratic leaders and activists in the area. The district includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The Florida redistricting process has been one of the most closely watched in the country, as Republicans gained control of the process and redrew maps that are expected to favor GOP candidates in multiple districts statewide.
