Primary elections on Tuesday established the general election candidates for key congressional races in Montana and New Jersey.

In Montana's 1st Congressional District, Sam Forstag won the Democratic primary and will compete for the open House seat in November. The district became available after Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke announced he would not seek re-election at the end of his current term.

Meanwhile in New Jersey, Justin Murphy secured the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate after winning Tuesday's GOP primary. Murphy, described as a Navy veteran, will challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Cory Booker in the November general election.

Booker is seeking re-election to his Senate seat, which he has held since 2013 when he won a special election following the resignation of Sen. Frank Lautenberg. The New Jersey race pits the established Democratic incumbent against the Republican challenger who emerged from a competitive primary field.

Both races will be closely watched as part of the broader battle for control of Congress in the 2024 elections. The Montana House seat represents a potential pickup opportunity for Democrats with the incumbent Republican stepping down, while New Jersey's Senate contest involves an incumbent defending his position.
