An 18-year-old former student opened fire at a vocational high school in southeast Turkey on Tuesday, wounding 16 people before taking his own life, according to local officials.
The attack occurred at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district of Sanliurfa province. Governor Hasan Sildak said the gunman, armed with a shotgun, fired randomly at the school before hiding inside the building.
Among those wounded were 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee, and a police officer. Most victims were treated locally in Siverek, while five with more serious injuries were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital, according to Sildak.
Video footage showed dozens of students evacuating the school and running toward the gate. Security forces and police special operations units were deployed to the scene after the gunman initially refused to surrender.
"The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself," Sildak told reporters. He added that a comprehensive investigation into the shooting would be conducted.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. School shootings are rare in Turkey, making this incident particularly unusual for the country.
