The comments came one day before Trump criticized Mamdani, saying the mayor is "destroying New York." The exchange reflects ongoing tensions between the Democratic mayor and the Republican president since Mamdani entered office.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who recently marked his 100th day in office, has been navigating relationships with political figures across the spectrum. On Saturday, he met with former President Barack Obama at a Bronx childcare center, where both leaders read to preschoolers and participated in a sing-along.

The meeting with Obama was their first in-person encounter and comes as Mamdani works to establish his administration's relationships with federal leaders. Both Mamdani and Trump have previously exchanged public criticism since the mayor's arrival on the political scene.

Despite the public disputes, Mamdani emphasized the working nature of his relationship with the current president during the NBC interview, suggesting the two leaders can maintain dialogue despite their political differences.
