1 Dead, 5 Injured in Shooting at Louisiana Mall Food Court
A shooting between two groups at Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge left one person dead and five injured Thursday.
One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting Thursday at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, according to police.
The shooting occurred in the mall's food court when two groups of people got into an argument that escalated into gunfire, Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse said during a news conference. Several suspects fled the scene as police responded to the mall.
Five people were injured and transported to local hospitals, while additional reports suggested as many as 10 people total may have been hurt in the incident. Police Chief Morse said some innocent bystanders may have been caught in the crossfire between the two groups.
A large police presence responded to the scene, with helicopters and officers searching the parking areas. Police have taken several suspects into custody, though the exact number varies across reports. Mayor Sid Edwards addressed those responsible, saying "To the thugs that did this, we're going to catch you."
Police described the shooting as appearing "targeted" rather than random. Chief Morse told reporters that witnesses should provide any video of the incident to assist the investigation. He assured the public there was no ongoing threat to safety.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he was aware of the shooting and advised the public to avoid the area. The incident marks the second instance of gun violence in Louisiana this week, following a domestic shooting in Shreveport that left eight children dead.
